Lee Hsien Yang (simplified Chinese: 李显扬; traditional Chinese: 李顯揚; pinyin: Lǐ Xiǎnyáng, born 1957) is the second son of Singapore's first Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew. He is currently the Non-Executive Director and Chairman of Fraser and Neave Limited and chairman of Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS).
Like his brother Lee Hsien Loong (the current Prime Minister of Singapore), Lee was awarded the President's Scholarship and the Singapore Armed Forces Overseas Scholarship by the Public Service Commission (Singapore) after finishing his secondary education at Catholic High School and pre-university education at National Junior College. He went to study at Cambridge University, graduated with a first class honours degree of Engineering in 1979, then a Master of Science degree under the Sloan Fellows programme from Stanford Graduate School of Business. He then returned to Singapore to serve in the armed forces, rising to the rank of Brigadier-General.
He was the Chief Executive Officer of Singapore Telecommunications from May 1995 until April 2007.[1] He was replaced in that capacity by Chua Sock Koong, the company's Chief Financial Officer.[2]
Lee has ruled out a career in politics.[3] Chua officially took over Lee as SingTel's Group CEO on 1 April 2007.[4]
In September 2007, Fraser and Neave appointed Lee as Non-Executive Director and Chairman-Designate with effect from 6 September 2007. Lee assumed the position of non-executive Chairman of the Company and Consultant upon the retirement of Dr Fam on 15 October 2007.[5]
On 1 July 2009, Lee was appointed as the chairman of the restructured Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) by the Singapore Transport Minister, Raymond Lim.
Lee married lawyer Lim Suet Fern, the daughter of Economics Professor Lim Chong Yah in 1981. The couple have three sons.
